Triora Musica’s first course outside Italy will be held in Brighton. It will concentrate on one of the finest and most technically demanding repertoires to have emerged in England during the early sixteenth century.

It is suited to experienced consort singers, able to hold a line on their own with clear well tuned voices. Most music will be sung with a maximum of 2 or 3 voices per part, but there might also be some further sub divisions in certain sections. For that reason numbers will be restricted to no more than 20 singers.

The English choir at that time was divided into 5 rather than 4 voice types:
  Treble A light, high voice able to sing easily to top A or B flat (originally sung by boys)
  Mean equivalent to mezzo soprano with a range from around A below middle C to F (originally sung by boys)
  Alto A voice that often goes as low as the tenor (originally a male voice, but can be male or female in this modern context!)
  Tenor A voice with roughly the same range as modern tenor. Women also welcome!
  Bass A voice covering much the same range as the modern bass.


 



Pitch was possibly a little higher in the sixteenth century and we will sing most of the music in pitches to reflect that and to keep the integrity of the 5 voice types. However there will be flexibility – particularly within the inner parts where ranges often cross.


As a professional singer who gave over a thousand concerts with the renowned Tallis Scholars, Deborah Roberts is also a regular teacher on courses and summer schools around the world, director of Brighton Consort, the visiting vocal teacher at Cork University, Ireland, and co founder and artistic director of Brighton Early Music Festival.

The course will start on Friday evening with a sing through of some of the repertoire to be covered over the weekend, and culminate in a very informal concert, open to friends and other interested people, on Sunday evening.
Daily vocal warm-ups will give all participants the chance to improve their technique as well as learning much about the art of ensemble music making.

A high standard of sight reading is desirable, though music will be sent out in advance.Accommodation in Brighton
